With the warmer weather arriving in Cape Town this weekend, there has been an increase in outdoor activities. The dedicated Western Cape Department of Health & Wellness EMS/AMS rescue helicopter conducted three mountain rescues and airlifted one patient in critical condition.
Here are some highlights of the missions:
Saturday mid-morning a patient was airlifted from Silvermine Nature Reserve and taken to hospital for further medical care. Early Sunday morning, the crew was dispatched to Thomas Hut in the Hex River Mountains, north of Worcester, at Disa Dell on the northeastern slopes of Brandwacht Peak to airlift a patient who sustained an injury during an overnight hike. The patient was extracted off the mountain and handed over to the local road ambulance for transportation to hospital. Shortly after returning to base, the helicopter was dispatched to airlift a patient in critical condition from Vredenburg Provincial Hospital to Groote Schuur Hospital for specialist care. Later that afternoon, shortly after landing back at base, the rescue helicopter was dispatched to Lions Head for another mountain rescue. One patient was airlifted to Groote Schuur Hospital.
A heartfelt thank you to all the rescue personnel for their unwavering dedication and professionalism. Together, they exemplify the spirit of collaboration in their mission to save lives.
