Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) Safety & Awareness Training in KZN

02 July 2024

IPSS Medical Rescue & Mi7 National Group joined us for the Part 138 orientation at our King Shaka Base. Our helicopter pilot Keyan Nel & Emergency Care Practitioner (ECP) Thomas Youens presented the training to the team. Part 138 training is a mandatory requirement for all South African aero-medical services before commencing work on a HEMS aircraft.

All operation and medical crew are required to attend this training. It is intended to impart both knowledge and understanding of the way in which air ambulance services function as well as the interaction between the respective crews, their duties and responsibilities.

This training aims to deepen the understanding of how air ambulance services operate, ensuring compliance with technical standards set by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA). This includes complying with regulatory requirements, awareness about the dangers of working around aircraft and understanding the need for teamwork with effective communication and support throughout all phases of the mission to mention a few.

Collaborating with all our stakeholders ensures that we are able to enable equitable access to healthcare for everyone!
