Meet Carin, our Safety & Security Officer who joined the AMS team in June this year. With a lifelong love for aviation, Carin brings passion expertise to our team. Let’s discover more about her journey…
Who is Carin Abrahams?
Carin Abrahams is our newly appointed Safety and Security Officer, based at our Head Office. With a deep-rooted passion for aviation that took flight during her childhood in Cape Town, Carin’s journey began after graduating from Norman Hensilwood High School. Her career path led her to the South African Air Force, where she held the position of Flight Operations Support and honed her skills and expertise in safety and security.
After her service in the Air Force, Carin spent 11 years at Air Traffic and Navigation Services South Africa (ATNS), specialising in the training of Air Traffic Controllers in the Southern Region.
Tell us about your role here and what led you to this chosen field.
As the Safety and Security Officer, Carin oversees all aspects related to ensuring the safe operation of our activities. This includes implementing protocols and measures to maintain safety standards across our operations.
“My career path has been shaped by a lifelong passion for aviation, flying, and humanitarian aid, interests ingrained since childhood. The aero-medical sector has always held a particular fascination for me due to its critical role in merging aviation with humanitarian efforts.
Joining AMS was a deliberate decision. The organisation’s commitment to enabling equitable access to healthcare for all and its approach to safety and security align perfectly with my career goals.”
What motivates you?
“My faith anchors me with purpose and perspective. A good cup of coffee in the morning sets the tone for the day, keeping me focused and energised throughout the day.
And “There’s something about the sight of a C130 Hercules fly-past that never fails to inspire me, a powerful symbol of capability and determination in action!”
These elements collectively drive me, inspiring enthusiasm and dedication in tackling challenges head-on.”
If your life was a movie, what would it be called?
“Flight to Eternity by Yuval Ovadia.”
How do you unwind at the end of each day to manage workload and avoid burnout?
I rely on my support network after a busy day to avoid burnout… My family provides me with a strong foundation that helps me to recharge. On Saturday mornings, I prioritise quality time with them, often enjoying a leisurely breakfast at the beach followed by indulging in some ice cream together.
This routine allows me to disconnect from work, rejuvenate, and maintain a healthy balance between my professional responsibilities and personal life.
What’s an unexpected hobby you’re passionate about?
“One of my surprising passions is sampling different cuisines when travelling to new countries. Diving into local flavours and dishes is a thrilling experience with the unique tastes and cultural richness each place has to offer.
Additionally, I find myself drawn to playing the bass guitar, which adds another layer of excitement and creativity to life outside of work.
These hobbies provide me with avenues to explore and enjoy life’s adventures in diverse and unexpected ways.”
Do you have any motto you live by?
“The skyline is the baseline. The excellence bar that you pushed yesterday should be your starting point today. Dream big, work hard and let what you love, be what you do!”
