Patients airlifted to receive specialist medical care

12 June 2024

Today, all the Western Cape Department of Health & Wellness EMS aero-medical platforms were utilised to ensure patients receive access to specialist medical care. Through coordinated efforts between the AMS National Operations Centre (NOC) and the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness, patients were efficiently transferred from Beaufort West and George Hospital to Groote Schuur and Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospitals.

On the first leg of the interfacility transfer mission, the Western Cape Department of Health & Wellness EMS/AMS rescue helicopter was dispatched from Oudtshoorn to Beaufort West to airlift a patient to George. Concurrently, the Western Cape Department of Health & Wellness EMS/AMS emergency fixed-wing aircraft was dispatched from Cape Town to George to airlift patients from George Hospital. At George Airport, a wing-to-wing transfer was done, transferring the patient from the rescue helicopter to the fixed-wing aircraft for the continued journey to Cape Town.

This mission exemplifies our unwavering commitment in partnership with the Western Cape Department of Health & Wellness EMS to ensure access to healthcare for all. The NOC, the heartbeat of our operations, functions 24/7, 365 days a year. Staffed by a dedicated team of coordinators, the NOC tirelessly monitors and manages operations nationwide, facilitating seamless coordination and response.
