Who is Marchel Frans?

“My name is Marchel Frans, and I am an ECP flight paramedic at AMS. I grew up in Eerste River, Cape Town, where I was immersed in a vibrant community and the breathtaking landscapes of the Western Cape.

Tell us about your role here and what led you to this chosen field.

“My role revolves around responding to emergencies swiftly and efficiently, whether it’s on-site or during patient transfers. I provide essential medical assistance and ensure that patients receive optimal care during critical situations.

My journey into this field was driven by a deep-seated desire to make a meaningful impact in people’s lives during their most vulnerable moments. I keep healthcare professionals in high regard for their unwavering dedication and compassion. These qualities ignited my passion and steered me towards becoming a paramedic.

Every day in this role reinforces my commitment to delivering compassionate care and making a difference. It is a privilege to be part of a team that plays such a vital role in emergency medical services, ensuring that patients receive the best possible care when they need it most.”

What motivates you?

“The unwavering support of my family, which serves as a constant source of determination and inspiration. Their encouragement pushes me to give my absolute best in everything I do, especially in my role as a flight paramedic at AMS.

Additionally, the satisfaction of knowing that our work directly impacts and improves lives is incredibly motivating. Whether it’s providing critical care during emergencies or ensuring patients receive comfort and support during medical transfers, every action we take can make a significant difference.”

How do you unwind at the end of each day to manage workload and avoid burnout?

“Hiking and cycling allow me to enjoy the beautiful views and clear my mind after a challenging day. Spending quality time with my family is also a priority; their presence brings me joy and helps me recharge emotionally.

Music is another passion of mine. Playing the piano and bass guitar serves as a therapeutic outlet for me. It allows me to immerse myself in creativity and expression, which is incredibly relaxing.”

What’s a wild adventure you’ve had or an unexpected hobby you’re passionate about?

“One of the most memorable adventures I’ve had was during my student days when I hiked in the Cederberg mountains. It was both physically demanding and immensely rewarding, immersing myself in the rugged beauty of the terrain and pushing my limits in a challenging environment. The experience taught me resilience and deepened my appreciation for nature.

On the hobby front, I have a passion for cooking. It’s a creative outlet where I can experiment with flavours and techniques, creating dishes that bring joy to those I share them with. Cooking allows me to unwind, express my creativity, and connect with others through good food.”
